Masks of God Occidental Mythology
Published in Paperback by Penguin Putnam~childrens Hc ()
Author: Joseph Campbell
Average review score:

The Passion of the Western Soul
I cannot overrate the depth & breadth of Campbell's insights. This book is at once visionary and scholarly, passionate and detached:in sum, it reveals the powerful (under)currents that helped to shape our minds and hearts into what we are. From Persia and Israel, from Greece and Rome, through the crucible of Norse and Irish mythologies of the Middle Ages-this book ends with Zarathustra's words "By my love and my hope I beseech you-do not forsake hero in your soul!"

Meanwhile Back at the Castle
Published in Paperback by Ace Books (June, 1973)
Author: Hope Campbell

I've always loved this one!
This book is one of my all-time favorites. It's extremely funny; the characters are interesting and well-written, and the plot moves very fast! You can never tell where it's going to go next.

This is the story of a teenage girl and her family (parents and two brothers), who buy a small island in the St. Lawrence seaway when they suddenly come into an unexpected inheritance. The catch is, that when US and Canadian boundaries were established, each country thought this island belonged to the other! So now they don't just have an island; they have an independent country!

Setting up international relations and dealing with things like immigrants are things that the family never planned on, and their creative solutions are hilarious.

Though this book is usually classified as "young adult," I still enjoy it, though I'm long past that age. One warning, though -- the book was set in the turbulent 60's, and it's rather dated. It's been out of print a long time, but I would love to get a copy of it someday.

The Mechanics of Wonder: The Creation of the Idea of Science Fiction (Liverpool Science Fiction Texts and Studies, 15)
Published in Hardcover by Liverpool Univ Pr (June, 1999)
Author: Gary Westfahl
Average review score:

How a literary subgenre came to be commonly accepted
In The Mechanics Of Wonder: The Creation Of The Idea Of Science Fiction, Gary Westfahl presents a sustained and documented argument for the importance of magazine editor Hugo Gernsback as being the true creator of what has become known as the science fiction genre. After initial chapters on Gernsback, Westfahl goes on to examine the way in which the Gernsback tradition was adopted and modified by later magazine editors and early critics., including a re-evaluation of the importance of John W. Campbell to the history of science fiction. The Mechanics Of Wonder will prove of immense interest to scholars of science fiction literary history and scifi enthusiasts with an appreciation of how a literary subgenre came to be a commonly accepted category of American literature and popular culture.

The Medical Transcription Workbook
Published in Paperback by Health Professions Inst (1999)
Authors: Linda Campbell and Health Professions Institute
Average review score:

Excellent Preparation for Credentialing Exams
I have been a medical transcriptionist for many years and currently work for oncologists. However, when I wanted to study for the credentialing exams, I really did not know where to start. Fortunately, I found the Medical Transcriptionist Workbook. It showed me what my weak points were and what I needed to study. I like the way it is divided into sections. I especially like having the answers in a separate booklet instead of at the end of a chapter or the back of the book - that really helps curtail the tempation to "peek". I have recommended this book to a couple of co-workers who have expressed interest in the credentialing exams and will continue to recommend it,

What Every Access 2.0 User Needs To Know
Although this book covers MSA 2.0, I use it frequently to pass on the valuable information it contains to the users I support within the State Of Washington Government office where I am employed. The answers are clear, concise and easy to follow. My deepest regret is that Mary didn't write more.

Milton: A Biography: The Life
Published in Hardcover by Clarendon Pr (September, 1996)
Authors: William Riley Parker and Gordon Campbell
Average review score:

Parker's biography of Milton is the finest study of the poet
Parker carefully balances his focus on Milton's life and the poet's immortal works. Parker begins his study by letting the reader know that he is both a lover of Milton's art and an admirer of Milton the individual. One who devotes time to this considerable study will certainly obtain similar sentiments.

Actually is Helpful...
This book contains helpful advice on how to operate with the media. The writing is interesting, humorous, and talented, and the book covers how to be safe and cautious with the net, magazines, books, tv, and more. I found it easy to read and thought-provoking. I think it would be a great book for anyone, because we are all dealing constantly with the media in one way or another.
